The Gene Drayton Unit was amongst the vanguard of the new breed of Hammond bands coming out of the 60s/Mod scene in the early 2000s. With the added attraction of the raunchiest tenor sound in town, the ‘All-conquering Mod-soul aggregation’ became a fixture on the scene, playing London’s 100 Club 25 times, as well as travelling to Italy, France, Spain, Greece, Scotland, Sweden, Belgium and Ireland to promote a unique blend of Soul, Rhythm’n'Blues, Jazz and 60s Garage. Their 6 7’’ singles and 3 LPs are now becoming increasingly hard to find.

After a 6-year hiatus, the GDU is back. Original members Mark Norton (saxes, flute, vocals), Toby Kinder (organ) and Mark Claydon (drums), are now joined by the rocksteady rhythm guitar of Lenny Bignell (Pama International, Sidewalk Doctors, Rhoda Dakar) and the no-nonsense precision of bass-player, Raydn Hunter (The Fantastics).
